Known for her sweeping, deconstructivist style, Hadid was a visionary. The MAXXI stands as one of her most prominent European creations — a sprawling network of intersecting volumes, curves, and stark surfaces. And yet, as I walked through it, I couldn’t help but feel profoundly disconnected.

At first glance, the MAXXI impresses with scale and drama. It dominates the Flaminio district with its irregular shapes, tall concrete walls, and cold materials — mainly steel, reinforced cement, and glass. From the outside, it exudes power, almost verging on intimidation. It’s majestic, yes — but not magnificent. Its aesthetic strikes not awe, but rather a kind of respectful unease.

As I explored its winding paths and convoluted ceilings, I realized what was missing: warmth, emotion, grounding — the soulful architecture that createshealing environments.

From the perspective of Anthro-Feng Shui and the anthropology of space, the MAXXI is heavily dominated by the Metal element — a symbol of rationality, authority, and austerity. The subdued greys and whites, the sharp forms, and the use of hard, reflective surfaces reflect this. Metal, while powerful and precise, lacks the emotional nourishment of the Earth element or the organic vitality of Wood and Water. Walking through MAXXI felt like navigating a world of abstract ideas without roots — more of a mental exercise than a soulful experience.

Even the designated “rest areas” felt transient. Tucked away under staircases in circulation zones, they seemed to discourage lingering. One doesn’t settle into the MAXXI; one passes through — or floats, untethered. It is a space designed more to impress than to embrace.

Hadid’s design may intentionally reflect the nature of contemporary art — conceptual, cerebral, and often emotionally detached. In this way, the building succeeds: it becomes an extension of the kind of art it houses. But in doing so, it loses touch with the principles of conscious design and human-centered space — principles that are foundational to creating environments where people feel held, seen, and inspired.

That said, there were two elements that stood out as meaningful gestures of connection.

The first was the mirrored parallelepiped that protrudes from the main structure. This architectural element reflects the surrounding urban landscape, including the historic church across the museum and neighboring buildings. This is one of the few places where the building acknowledges and communicates with its context, creating a brief moment of dialogue between past and present, between the futuristic and the familiar. It’s a rare instance where the museum reaches out, rather than folding in on itself.

The second was the outdoor playground. In the late afternoon, families gathered there, and the space transformed. Despite the cold metal and concrete features and unfunctional benches, the white pebbled area became a lively arena of laughter and social connection. Children ran freely, their joy infusing the space with the very vitality it otherwise lacked. In this moment, the MAXXI fulfilled — however briefly — the role of a socially inclusive public space. It reminded me that people — not materials — bring warmth and soul to a place.

Still, from the standpoint of the anthropology of place, the MAXXI remains a space without emotional grounding. I had anticipated inspiration, a sense of being propelled into the future of artistic creativity. Instead, I was left feeling disoriented, disconnected from the cosmos, from creativity, and from the space itself. The museum seems more like a monument to the ego of the designer than a reflection of the wellbeing of those who use it.

This visit reaffirmed my belief in the necessity of holistic design — design that connects not only with the eye, but with the heart, body, and spirit. Public architecture should strive to be more than conceptually impressive; it should be emotionally resonant, spiritually grounding, and aesthetically nourishing. This is what creates healing environments and soulful architecture — places that people return to, not just because they’re important, but because they feel good to be in.

The MAXXI may dominate the skyline, but in the absence of emotional connection to place, it leaves us longing for something deeper — a reminder that true innovation in architecture must serve not only the future, but also the human soul.

What Kind of Spaces Speak to Your Soul?

Architecture shapes more than cities — it shapes how we feel, connect, and belong. As you reflect on this visit to the MAXXI, I invite you to consider:

🔹 What kind of public spaces leave you feeling inspired, safe, or grounded?
🔹 Do you believe architecture should move beyond aesthetics to truly support human wellbeing?

💬 I’d love to hear your reflections — feel free to leave a comment, or reach out directly if this sparked something in you. Let’s keep the conversation going about how we can design spaces that truly nourish the human spirit.

For more on Anthro-Feng Shui, holistic spatial design, or to explore how to bring these principles into your own environment, feel free to browse the site or get in touch.

Let’s imagine and create spaces that connect deeply — not just with the eye, but with the heart. 🌿

Adding a mask from a different culture to your home is not merely a decorative choice; it is an intentional act of integrating an object rich with history, symbolism, and energy into your personal space. Through my Anthro-Feng Shui approach, I guide individuals in harmonizing such meaningful items with their home’s existing energy flow. By doing so, we honor the cultural significance of the piece while ensuring that it aligns with our personal space’s energy and purpose.

Let’s explore how to thoughtfully introduce Su Boe, the bull mask from the Sardinian village of Ottana, into your living space. This mask, along with Merdule, plays a crucial role in an ancient rain-propitiation ritual believed to be connected to the cult of Dionysus Mainoles—the god of nature, life, and death, as well as the protector of animals. During the ritual, Su Boe (the bull) and Merdule (its master) perform a symbolic dance representing the god’s sacrifice. Dionysus dies for the well-being of humanity, only to be reborn, ensuring the renewal of nature and the promise of abundant harvests.

Understanding the Symbolism of Su Boe

Crafted from wood, Su Boe features a bull’s face with tall horns, a star between its eyes, engraved leaves on its cheeks, and geometric motifs adorning its snout. Traditionally, the mask’s color varies from dark to light brown, while its decorations are often green and red. Within Sardinian agro-pastoral culture, this mask embodies the deep connection and interdependence between humans and animals. Additionally, its formidable presence serves as a bridge between life and death, symbolizing transformation, renewal, and self-rebirth. If its association with the Dionysian cult holds true, Su Boe also carries divine energy, allowing the wearer to embody sacred power while simultaneously questioning personal identity through disguise.

Placing Su Boe in Your Home

Given its intense symbolism, positioning Su Boe within your home requires thoughtful consideration. Here are the best ways to integrate it harmoniously into your space:

Supporting Yin Energy This mask’s essence resonates with yin energy, which embodies calmness, introspection, and grounding. Consider placing it in areas meant for relaxation or meditation, such as a reading nook or a designated contemplation space.

Optimal Directions for Placement

North – Represents spirituality and introspection, making it an ideal direction if you seek to deepen your meditation practice.

Northeast – Embodies earth energy, fostering stability and grounding.

East – Symbolizes renewal and rebirth, aligning with Su Boe’s transformative energy.

Where Not to Place Su Boe Due to its dramatic and powerful features, avoid placing this mask in:

Bedrooms – Particularly children’s rooms, as its intense symbolism might subconsciously impact sleep and emotions.

Homes with Anxiety or Depression Concerns – The mask’s complex energy may amplify emotional sensitivity, causing unease or restlessness.

Enhancing Identity and Protection

For individuals with Sardinian heritage or those seeking a deeper connection to Sardinian culture, Su Boe serves as a powerful symbol of identity and belonging. Displaying this mask in your home can reinforce a strong sense of Sardinian pride and cultural roots, acting as a reminder of the island’s rich traditions and history. Additionally, its symbolic meanings of strength, renewal, and transformation can provide personal empowerment and a sense of resilience.

Imagine a space that not only looks stunning but truly reflects who you are—nurturing your well-being, fueling your creativity, and supporting your deepest aspirations. Anthro-Feng Shui is my unique approach, developed over 25 years of in-depth research and hands-on experience across Asia and Europe. It blends ancient wisdom traditions with modern lifestyle needs to create environments that go beyond mere aesthetics, transforming the way you live and interact with your surroundings.

Unlike traditional Feng Shui, which focuses mainly on spatial arrangement and energy flows, Anthro-Feng Shui integrates the insights of the anthropology of place and material culture, and spiritual practices such as Taoism, Buddhism, and Yoga. This method is designed to align your space with your personal identity, values, and life purpose—creating a home or office that is not only harmonious but deeply meaningful and supportive of your well-being.

Example: Incorporating a Persian Rug into a Sophisticated Home

Consider a client with a deep appreciation for artistry, who acquires a Persian rug for its intricate craftsmanship and vibrant colors. Although not connected to its religious or cultural significance, they are drawn to the rug’s ability to reflect their sophisticated taste and culturally engaged identity. This piece represents their values of quality and fine craftsmanship, showcasing an interest in diverse artistic traditions.

In Anthro-Feng Shui, the rug’s placement is more than aesthetic—it’s about creating the right energy flow. Persian rugs inherently carry rich Yin energy, evoking calmness and grounding the space. When placed thoughtfully, such as beneath a minimalist coffee table in a spacious living room, the rug adds sophistication while enhancing tranquility, promoting balance without overwhelming the room’s modern design.

Ultimately, this Persian rug becomes more than a decorative piece; it’s a reflection of the client’s lifestyle. Its craftsmanship enhances the energy of the space, nurturing their personal identity and creating a harmonious environment that aligns with their taste and values.

How Anthro-Feng Shui Differs from Traditional Feng Shui

Beyond Physical Arrangement – While traditional Feng Shui focuses on furniture placement and energy flow, Anthro-Feng Shui expands this by considering socio-cultural identity, values, mission, and emotional resonance. The Persian rug example shows how an object can reflect the client’s refined taste while still supporting a harmonious and balanced environment.

Culturally Adaptive – Unlike rigid classical systems, Anthro-Feng Shui is tailored to individual backgrounds, lifestyles, and contemporary settings, making it accessible across cultures. The Persian rug, while steeped in history, can be appreciated in any home that values artistry, craftsmanship, and elegance, regardless of cultural background.

Deeper Psychological and Emotional Integration – It aligns spaces with personal identity, spiritual beliefs, and behavioral patterns, ensuring environments feel both meaningful and functional. The rug in this example speaks to the client’s love of beauty and sophistication, integrating their identity with the space in a way that feels both authentic and comfortable.

Business and Organizational Impact – It helps businesses align their environments with their mission, company culture, and market dynamics, enhancing productivity, teamwork, and customer engagement. Similarly, an office space could benefit from the integration of an object like the Persian rug, which would enhance a company’s sophisticated image while ensuring the energy remains balanced and welcoming.

Fusion of Ancient and Modern Approaches – While incorporating traditional Feng Shui tools like the Bagua map and compass, it also applies behavioral analysis, environmental psychology, and anthropological insights to create truly customized spaces. The Persian rug serves as an example of how Anthro-Feng Shui bridges ancient cultural artistry with modern living, enriching the home with history and elegance.

There are a lot of misconceptions surrounding this ancient practice, often dismissed as mere interior design or a mystical belief system. In reality, Feng Shui is a deeply rooted art-science with a fascinating history and a clear purpose: to help us align our spaces with the natural environment to promote well-being, happiness, and prosperity.

By the 3rd century A.D., it had developed into a sophisticated body of knowledge about spatial arrangement and orientation. For more than 2,000 years, it has shaped urban planning, architectural design, and the selection of sites for buildings and burials in China.

Over time, Feng Shui has transcended its Chinese roots and spread across the globe. Today, it’s widely used to harmonize spaces—from homes to businesses—by aligning them with natural energies.

But what exactly underpins Feng Shui? At its core, Feng Shui is based on Chinese correlative thought, which sees a deep connection between three realms: heaven (tian 天), earth (di 地), and humans (ren 人). The belief is that humans are microcosms of the larger universe, and the forces of heaven and earth influence our health, prosperity, and well-being. So, by carefully situating our homes and workplaces, we can tap into the positive energies of both heaven and earth.

A fundamental concept in Feng Shui is qi (pronounced ch’i), the invisible life force that flows through everything in the universe. Ancient Chinese philosophy holds that feng (wind) and shui (water) are primary manifestations of qi in the natural environment, which is why “wind and water” are in the very name of Feng Shui. Our living environments are filled with qi, and the quality of this energy affects the quality of our lives.

When the elements of a space—whether it’s furniture placement, décor, or even the landscape surrounding a home—are not in harmony with nature, it can generate shaqi (negative energy). Let’s discover how Feng Shui can transform your world.
